People take substances for all kinds of reasons. Often the main reason for starting is that it makes them feel good; they get a great "buzz" leaving them feeling relaxed, happy, confident and often full of energy. Sometimes they use substances as a means of escaping from things that are particularly stressful or worrying for them. They may feel under pressure from their peers to use substances, as it is important for young people to feel part of a group. It could be that they are just bored and feel they have no-where to go or nothing interesting to do.
Whatever the reason it is very important for the person who experiences problems with substances that they receive continued positive support whether it is from their local agency, family, friends or other people.
It is also just as important that you receive continued support for yourself as a parent or carer dealing with substance misuse can cause increased stress and worry for all who are involved. There are many agencies that provide confidential help and support for yourself and other people. It may be that you don't want help just some information or advice about Drugs, Alcohol or Solvents.
